Grocery Tax Cut Passes in the House.

In an area filled with growth and new commerce it always surprises me to see tax increases.  I understand that with this many people and this many companies moving to NWA that we need to spend money.  It costs us a lot of money to fix the infrastructure, add emergency services, add schools, and other essentials.  What I don’t understand is the math.  If we have that many people and businesses moving here they are all new sources of income for the city and state governments.  I know we have to pay to accommodate them but isn’t the increased tax base doing that?

That is why I am glad to see that Arkansas is loosening the noose around our necks just a little.  I think it is too little but “they” say that it will go down more in the coming months and years.  The house has just passed a bill that on July 1 will take state grocery tax down from 6% to 3%.  Now that is huge for most families in Arkansas, and really could make the difference in being able to afford healthy foods.  Don’t you think they could just go ahead and get rid of that other 3% though?

Many states across the nation charge tax only on prepared food, not on groceries.  This along with our constant increase in taxes in all other areas makes me wonder what are our politicians thinking in only cutting it in half.  I believe that they are only cutting the tax in half for two reasons.  First they want to keep that money!  Well that was hard to come up with right?  The other reason, and this is the big one, is because then theyd are your hero now and when they cut the rest of it out.

If the decrease doesn’t work out then they won’t go down further and will let the next group of politicians try to raise it back up making the current government your hero and future government evil.  Now am I saying that the politicians are using this for personal gain?  Of course, is that the only reason for the decrease?  Of course not.

Our legislators are looking out for number one (themselves) but I really believe that it is because they think they do the best good for us.  They truly believe that they are helping us more than anyone else can/will.  So when I started this I really just intended to tell you about the decrease and link to this article that shows the details of the vote and it turned into my opinion/theory on government.

So there you have it, come July we can all breath a little easier when we go to the super market.
