How $2 Billion Fell In My Lap
You know those people out there that just seem to have things fall in their lap? I remember a cruise I took about ten years ago where a couple from my hometown, Kansas City, won $12,000 as the winner of bingo on the ship. Normally when the pot goes that high, several winners end up splitting. Not this couple, they won the whole thing. As my wife and I were flying home, they sat behind us on the plane. As we discussed their good fortune further, we learned that they won the trip off a radio call in show. It’s these people that will drive you crazy!
In real estate, we see these people. We envy them. How do they do it? Why can’t it happen to me? Is it patience? Or is it risk taking? Or is it a little of both. This past week, a major league baseball player took the quicker route to fame and fortune. He now will play baseball for fun. He took his modest minor league baseball salary and bought a couple hundred acres of his great aunt’s in western Massachusetts so that she could receive the care she needed in a nursing home. His thoughts were to build a nice home on this beautiful land.
As he was clearing the land, he ran across some rock, and naturally become frustrated at this obstacle. He decided to get a bid to remove the rock so that he could continue. A geologist arrived to inform him that he had 240,000 tons of rock on this property. Guess what…this type of stone sells for $1000/ton. He begins spring practice this week $2.4 billion dollars richer! Let’s hope he takes care of his aunt.
Was this luck? Sure. But don’t miss the silver lining. He took the initiative. He bought the land. He cleared the land. He called a geologist. Luck won’t happen if we don’t give it the opportunity to happen. Always be looking for opportuntiy. Because behind every opportunity, luck might be lurking close by.
