University of Arkansas takes no smoking to a new level.
The University of Arkansas has decided that they are going to ban smoking on the entire campus. When I first heard this I thought it was a moot point considering that Arkansas has already banned indoor smoking statewide. It didn’t even occur to me that they would be banning it in the open air.
Let me start by saying I am not a smoker, and I am irritated by smoke myself. I do not however like it when people decide they are going to regulate a legal activity off of state property. Give me a break, I don’t even understand how you can make a rule saying you cannot smoke outside.
The best part is that this is their answer to people not following the current smoking policy. Until this goes into effect the rule is no smoking in a building or within 25 feet of an entrance. The problem is nobody follows this rule and that is due to in part the fact that the University doesn’t enforce this policy. There isn’t even a penalty for smoking by the door.
So at least to combat the lack of enforcement of the current rule they have decided on a stringent penalty for smoking on campus for now on. If you are caught smoking outside on the University of Arkansas campus you can expect to get weird looks from your peers. You read that right - they are going on the honor system and they aren’t even going to have a penalty.
